Kevin Richard Martin’s second album of 2023 is a potent ode to one of the music world’s most beloved figures. Black is a deconstruction of Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back To Black’, stretched to over 70 minutes in swathes of dark dub ambience, broiling jazz inflected rhythms, and heaving bass. Walls of low frequency drones are cradled in soft noise on ‘Loveless’, with teetering synths fading in and out, while monolithic string plucks revolve throughout the title track, slowly degrading in obsidian waves of distortion.
