‘GRM Works 1957 – 1962’ collects together a wave of material from the experimental composer Iannis Xenakis’ spell working with Pierre Schaeffer’s Groupe de Recherces Musicales, gratefully reissued from the archives by Editions Mego. Recorded between the aforementioned dates, the music documents an intense period of musical exchange between Xenakis and Schaeffer that spawned unsurpassable amounts of experimentation. ‘Concret PH’ has to be heard, not least due to its context: a ‘electronic poem’ created by Xenakis designed to be played out from 400 speakers lining the inner shell of Le Corbusier’s sublime, newly built ‘Philips Pavilion’ for the 1958 Brussels World Fair.
