With his debut album for Ostgut Ton still very fresh in our minds, Sandwell District’s David Sumner, also known as Function, reveals a new slice of wax. ‘Gradient EP’, an extended version of one of the most allusive cuts on his recent ‘Incubation’ LP divided into three parts – ‘Intro’, ‘I’ and ‘II’ – is tense and foreboding music, slowly building with a series of relentless clicks and glitches and sweeping synths, treading ground between industrial rhythms and minimalistic techno.
