After Pauline Oliveros descended into the depths of a cistern for her Deep Listening album, bandmate Stuart Dempster was compelled to do the same with his own solo work, hence Underground Overlays From The Cistern Chapel was born. Save for crystalline cymbal hits on ‘Melodic Communion’, each track is performed on wind instruments (conch, trombone, and brass didjeridu), making this album an ode to the air that flows through these unfathomably vast underground spaces. Golden tones of trombone blur together in reverent and rejoicing streams, married to seemingly eternal reverb tails, creating glorious harmony from sparse arrangements.
