Brooklyn outfit The Men didn’t enter the spotlight at the beginning of the 2010s so much as tear a hole in the curtain and force their way through. Following two explosive post-punk albums, their 2012 LP Open Your Heart expanded their sonic palette without trading in any of the thrust that made Leave Home and Immaculada such vital listens. The Gun Club are the most obvious touchstone for Open Your Heart, particularly in the way The Men embrace cowpunk on the likes of ‘Country Song’ and ‘Turn It Around’. That said, the influences come thick and fast across the LP, from the creme-de-la-creme of 90s American indie on ‘Please Don’t Go Away’ to ‘Cube’s window-shattering punk.
