Zola Jesus’ 2010 EP Stridulum saw the one born Nika Roza Danilova refining the sound she brought forth on debut LP The Spoils. While the two records share many sonic similarities - caustic industrial electronics, Gothic synths and Danilova’s spectral vocals to name but three - Stridulum sanded down the edges of her technique. The resulting six tracks are still suffused with apocalyptic portent but now pack an additional pop punch. It makes one think of The Cure circa Pornography.
