Atco Records, a sub-label of Atlantic Records, released the debut album from Dr. John in 1968, a bluesy hybrid of psychedelic rock, soul and jazz specific to the sounds of his native New Orleans. Failing to make much impact on its initial release, the album has since gone on to become a cult classic for its far-out musical ambition and peculiar experimentalism, from the searing brass and guitars of the curiously titled 'Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya', the quick-shuffling 'Danse Kalinda Ba Doom' and the incantatory 'I Walk on Guilded Splinters'. A genuinely strange and beguiling album from the psychedelic era.
