Originally released in 1998, this is the third album from American post-everything rock band Tortoise. Taking the beat-driven Motorik characteristics of their second record, Millions Now Living Will Never Die, Bitney et al. here add a sheer of psychedelic jazz in the execution; whirling guitar dervishes set fire with bristling drumscapes, and angular bass riffage - like Miles in the Chicago snow. Here, they incorporate more electronic sounds (paving the way to future work), evocative field recordings, and more unusual instrumentation (the marimba is heard more than once). They even spin our heads with a glorious ode to the great of American Minimalism Steve Reich on the chiming ‘ Ten-Day Interval’ - this is music to detonate TNT to... or perhaps music made by people detonating TNT. Either way, the results are addictive.
