It’s been a long fourteen years since drone doom metal supergroup Khanate (James Plotkin, Stephen O'Malley, Alan Dubin and Tim Wyskida) dropped their last album. Six years in the making, To Be Cruel finds the band coming back even heavier than before with a triptych of seething, foreboding, and totally unforgiving tracks at their disposal. Throbbing strums open ‘Like A Poisoned Dog’ at a sauntering pace, setting up the album’s long, drawn out growls and guttural bass buzzes. The screaming vocals part on ‘It Wants To Fly’ for a beckoning monologue, then to sinister whispers amidst the title track’s patiently striking percussion and menacing feedback.
