Detroit house mystic Moodymann shares a more experimental side to his mischievous persona with this rare reissue of the Black Mahogani 2 LP on Peacefrog. First issued in 2004 as a short run curio alongside the original Black Mahogani (and never repressed until now), its running mate was a selection of recordings taken from late-night jazz-y jams made during the era. Looser than its house-oriented predecessor, 2 shows off the man’s idiosyncratic gifts to arrangement and playing, showcasing a very particular depth of feel even when more or less messing around. Two versions of the soulful strut ‘When She Follows’ run here, but it's the marathon techno-meets-jazz of ‘Rectify’ that really cements this as a hidden gem in the Moodymann vault.
