Anthony Gonzalez has shown the kind of range throughout his career that most producers dream of. From indie rock ambience to stadium-sized anthems, Gonzalez has covered a lot of ground with his long-running M83 project while maintaining something of a signature calling card even as his work has drifted into film scoring and stage composition. Fantasy, his 9th LP under the M83 umbrella then, is both a continuation of that path and also something of a creative rebirth. Satisfying a desire to return somewhat to the roots of his practice, Fantasy emphasises guitars (lots of em) and vocals in ways his records have not since the halcyon days on the French label Gooom. Sequenced and arranged with the stage in mind, tracks like the gargantuan ‘Earth To Sea’ and the peppy ‘Sunny Boy’ could go toe to toe with anything in his beloved oeuvre.
