On its surface, Jan Jelinek’s latest work SEASCAPE – polyptych in collaboration with visual artist Clive Holden traces the motion of the seas, submerged under undulating waves. Dive deeper into the project and you’ll find it’s an exercise in transforming source material, as Holden manipulates sequences from the 1956 film Moby Dick while Jelinek uses vocals from Captain Ahab (played by Gregory Peck) to control a synthesiser system. With this context it’s easy to imagine microsecond fragments of speech stretched and distorted into these gargantuan pieces of sonic art, stuttering like buoys and ocean spray over frozen drones.
