With a discography as overflowing as Merzbow’s, a lot can slip through the cracks. Scene receives its first rerelease in almost 20 years, and it’s every bit as visceral and turbulent as when it dropped in 2005. ‘Part 1’ is short but impactful: the creaks and chirps of a rusty wheel rotate into slashes of silver. Subterranean rumbles on ‘Part 2’ thump like heavy footsteps, growing more suspenseful as buzzing, throttling noise layers on top, while the torrential rain of glass shards on ‘Part 3’ is tape rewind to the extreme.
