Noah Berger is just getting started in the music game, and with the colourful, genre-splicing world he has constructed on his debut album, it looks like he’s poised to keep experimenting for a while yet. Raised near Munich, the producer toys with sounds and styles alongside a globally sourced crew of collaborators on Consume Land Flea Market, evoking information overload as he explores “the contradiction between turbo-capitalist consumerism and the desire for vintage stuff in all kinds”. It’s a heady topic to tackle on a debut, but with over twenty tracks that barely scrape the 3 minute mark, this is an album of effortless lightspeed presentation, where constant mood shifts are fragmented through a hypermodern lens.

Strewn with “N.Yama Type Beats”, it’s clear the album’s genesis lies in the Soundcloud generation. Tracks like ‘Rosenheim Cops Arriving’ recall chopped ‘n’ screwed with their nocturnal, woozy vibes, while ‘83218 Halfing’ lurches with a fiery trap beat and ‘Crime Drift’ throws 808 cowbells into a frenzied whirlwind. The opening duo of ‘Get You Back’ and ‘War’ are prime examples where the playfulness of cloud rap merges with dense thunderclouds of electronic experimentation: the former features cutting lyrics from Maassai and a guttural bass bisecting an instrument beyond identification, while the dystopian aesthetics of the latter are owed to visceral lasering beats, created with Berger’s father Michael Fakesch of Funkstörung fame.

Transporting from hypnagogic glimmers to turbulent implosions, Consume Land Flea Market the Musik Aus Strom / Affine Records split release is a promising beginning for the punk-spirited Noayama.
