Nathan Fake has always made music with the potential to destroy the dancefloor of any club, from the razed synths of Drowning In A Sea Of Love and 4/4 bangers on Hard Island to the halcyon club trip of his previous Blizzards LP. While that raving mettle hasn’t wavered twenty years into his career (in fact, it’s even stronger), his sixth album Crystal Vision turns down a subterranean route with longform explorations and “non-literal” expressions hitting even harder than before.

Crystal Vision is a bookmark in the progression on Fake’s craft. Compare to any previous work and you’ll see just how much his sound has evolved, with rhythms more complex, and synths and sound design ever more inventive. Ambient leaning pieces like ‘CMD’ and Clark-featuring ‘Outsider’ bracket sections of the album, with the former’s fuzzy melodies providing a moment of peace and reflection in between the ruckus of seismic shuffles and uppercuts. ‘Hawk’ in particular embodies the album’s crystal clear vein, with crisp garage-like rhythms and a jackhammer beat cutting through the air like a diamond blade.

As ‘The Grass’ flows in, its spaciousness and Wizard Apprentice’s arresting vocals add a mystery to the air, with kicks like tremors displacing fine filtered grains of hi hats, and synths strobing incessantly throughout. Glossy chords weave through sneering stabs of woodpecker rhythms on ‘Vimana’, diffusing into colourful sparks of arpeggios that have become a signature in Fake’s sonic repertoire. Dense percussive layers build on ‘Boss Core’, filling every possible space with fluid rhythms before a pneumatic beat switch pushes air into a sense of perpetual forward motion.

Nathan Fake has pushed himself to his most potent sound yet with Crystal Vision.
