The fifth studio album from German pioneers Can, ‘Future Days’, embodies the band at a pivotal moment in their trajectory, following closely on from the relative commercial success of ‘Spoon’. Pleasured no doubt by their achievement, ‘Future Days’ sounds at ease – smooth, unhurried and coated in a lush veneer of harmony, with obvious references coming from the crashing ocean samples on ‘Bel Air’. The prevailing mood is ambient and on many an occasion the band betray their dedication to free-form experimentalism, sounding relatively structured, moving in splashing waves of crystalline water.
