Released in 1997, Let Us Play! is Coldcut’s forth studio LP and the first to be released via their excellent Ninja Tune label. Utilising a large array of samples and interesting mixing techniques, Coldcut manage to carve out a downtempo groove that’s distinctly their own. The piece opens with the cosmic jazz rolls of ‘Return To Margin’ before rifling through dub-laden lounge vibes on ‘Atomic Moog 2000 (Post Nuclear Afterlife Lounge Mix)’ and the sliced and diced ‘More Beats + Pieces (Daddy Rips It Up Mix)’ where the duo really flaunt their sampling talents. ‘Music 4 No Musicians’ plunges us down into a cosmic, synth-string wormhole; ‘Timber’ brings us back out of the otherside with its rollicking drum licks whilst the final frenzied drum rolls of ‘Atomic Moog 2000 (Bullet Train)’ wrap up a timeless classic from a very important duo.
