Saint Abdullah and Jason Nazary make for interesting sparring partners. Saint Abdullah’s brotherly duo Mohammad and Mehdi Mehrabani-Yeganeh have sketched a unique corner of the experimental electronic world with music that has run the course from corrosive but nimble noise through progressive synth wizardry to serene ambience, often over the runtime of a single release. Though born in Tehran, Mohammad and Mehdi were raised in the West, and that cultural clash colours in the music they make under the Abdullah moniker. Picking apart bits of art and sound from both sides of the globe in pursuit of a sound that pays tribute to their unique upbringing.

Jason Nazary has also carved his own path within the electronic music sphere. A revered drummer and composer, Nazary has released innovative music both solo and with combos as diverse as the psychedelic indie of Bear In Heaven, the free jazz of Little Women, and the modular synth explorations with Anteloper alongside Jaimie Branch, among others. A crucial figure within the Brooklyn music scene, he has certainly put a stamp on the underground of the last decade.

Their first collaborative full length for Disciples, Evicted In The Morning, is an inspired collaboration for experimental musics acolytes. While Nazary’s frantic drumming keeps most of Evicted In The Morning close to the pockets of jazz, there are plenty of moments throughout that see the trio branch out into further out zones. Early album highlight ‘Stub Of A Cucumber’ features buoyantly laconic synth dopplers hovering over Nazary’s ferocious and overwrought drum fills keep threatening to dissuade the serenity. The pulsating bassline on ‘Divine Timing Is Intuitive’ reads post-punk but Saint Abdullah’s restless production eventually fold into something more cerebral. Most striking is the late album track ‘The Butchers’ Shop’ also featuring Swedish bass player Petter Eldh builds from numerous false starts and fake outs, the track eventually interlocks these components into an intoxicating jam before ascending keys pull skyward.
