After the grander instrumental palettes of their recent albums, Mammal Hands return to the fundamentals of piano, wind, and drums for their fifth full length Gift from the Trees. The synergy in these tracks finds the trio at the height of their abilities, ranging from tranquil musings to lurching at breakneck pace. Hurried staccato piano is anchored by melodious saxophone on ‘The Spinner’, spawning recurring themes that evolve across ‘Riser’, with belting sax sailing the skies. Meanwhile, ‘Deep within Mountains’ waltzes to and fro, meditating on weightless chord progressions with swishing, wispy drums.
