Returning from haunting film score duties, Tim Hecker presents a masterclass of tension, release, and more tension on No Highs. Citing the “deluge of false positive corporate ambient currently in vogue”, No Highs defies notions of easy listening in ambient and electroacoustic music: the tracks are taut and pulsating, hushed yet neither soft nor calm, whispering suspense in cinematic textures. Scattered saxophone notes and staccato synth modulations are bound by gravity, constantly falling into steamy and frost-filled sighs and slowly lifting into ghostly swirls of wind.
