South-London producer Swindle lands on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings with his first EP since last year’s well-received debut album Long Live The Jazz. With his special ingredient, he’s in good hands at Brownswood: jazz is what Swindle keeps putting forward as his main influence on Walters Call. On the title track, he lets his brass ensemble start an expressive dance with sirens and a fiddly footwork beat before a muffled trumpet goes solo on jamming high frequency piano chords. The piano also stars in the intro of ‘Summer Fruits’ with a ballad opening sequence: Swindle uses chopped vocals and subtle claps to craft a mellow melodic groove whereas ‘Smash and Grab’ presents itself more heavy-footed with effectively accentuated bass notes.
