Citing 1990s IDM, the legacy of Warp Records, Krautrock and jazz as influences, ‘Kid A’ seats itself as one of Radiohead’s more atypical masterpieces. Distorted vocals, electronic trickery, heavily syncopated rhythms, ascending piano chords and thick synthetic bass drums marked another milestone in the band’s evolution. A deeply expansive world where the classics still appear, such as in the form of the piano-led dance groove of ‘Everything in its Right Place’, the driving repetitive bass line of ‘the National Anthem’ and the throbbing malformations of ‘Idioteque’. The sound of a band created, destroyed, rebuilt and reawakened. Brilliant album.
