Originally released in 1975, Kraftwerk plugged into possibly one of their finest moments on their fifth studio album Radio-Activity, or Radio-Aktivität: their first bilingual release featuring lyrics in both German and English. This was the completion of their chrysalis into fully electronic music, showcasing innovative representative sonics through pure voltage, and what better way to do that than with a concept album on all things radio?

Radioactivity and radio stations combine in tracks teetering between synth-pop riding the skies and glittering fizzing sound art, with filtered newscasters, broadcast jingles, and excited atomic melodies. The puncturing beat of ‘Geiger Counter’ gradually speeds up as radiation filters in and distorts the silence, leading into the reverent but tense title track whose choral undertones (made with the Vako Orchestron sample playback keyboard), pinprick synths, and Morse code signals capture the duality of scientific wonder and Cold War paranoia they would continue to explore.

The Orchestron evokes hope just as much as it does wobbly distortion on this album, as it’s unhurried in between swarms of radiowaves and details of wildly tuning dials on ‘Radioland’. Dizzying Gregorian chants meet hypnotic high pitched sirens on ‘Radio Stars’, and the strangely sweet lonesome machine pop of ‘Ohm Sweet Ohm’, leaving off with meditative vocoder, creaky cello-esque Orchestron keys, and percussion like soft little microshocks.

Radio-Activity is an enduringly milestone in Kraftwerk’s evolution from experimental adventurers to pioneers of electronic music.
