Los Angeles based experimental composer Katie Gately explores both the light and dark sides of humanity with Fawn / Brute, the first LP since the birth of her daughter. A concept album of sorts born out the natural tide of child-rearing, the Fawn side (if you will) brims with vigor as Gately became inspired and energized in her early pregnancy, producing tracks like the positively effervescent title track and the equally swinging ‘Cleave’. The more brutish back half hues darker as the anxieties and turbulence of actual birth started to creep into her process, leading to more fury on the likes of the more grotesquely named ‘Brute’ and ‘Chaw’. Written in tribute to her daughter Fawn, the album plays kinda like a diary of her prenatal development, making it a strange but touching gift.
