It hasn’t been that long since Yaeji’s distinct dance pop sound turned heads with her first two EPs, yet she has created a club culture in just over five years that many legends have worked decades for. Her debut album With A Hammer not only cements this, but smashes it to smithereens entirely to build something new. With Hammer Lee in hand and viscerally detailed production, Yaeji’s breathy vocals and woozy sound find surprising reinventions: concrete beats are sledgehammered into rubble, pneumatic twitches “break the cycles”, and experimental cuts border on new age and ambient with flutes and vocals washing over each other.
