Long known as a must-see live act, German trio The Notwist take apart and rebuild their latest record (2021’s Vertigo Days) with this set culled from a special live performance tracked at their studio. An ambitious set that saw The Notwist explore new timbres, instruments, and languages like never before alongside a heady list of collaborators, Vertigo Days was certainly a product of precise studio wizardry. Live from Alien Research Centre then is a countering move, stripping away some of the production sheen with the end result being a stirring and propulsive second look at these wonderful songs. What’s revealed is the beating heart at the centre of Vertigo Days, and it’s The Notwist at their physical best some four decades in.
