Grecian singer and producer Evita Manji’s long-awaited full length debut for the PAN label has finally surfaced. Spandrel? is something like a proper introduction for an artist who’s been working in the shadows of sound design and creative direction for some time. With a foot in the worlds of contemporary club, baroque, and the avant garde, the music on Spandrel? nimbly manoeuvers between these modes. Tracks like ‘Oil/Too Much’ and ‘The Lungs of a Burning Body’ certainly play around with the tools of contemporary pop music, but from a side angle, and with confrontation. The same is doubly true of those that brush against ambient and digital folk.
