What began out as Johnny Jewel’s musical score to the feature-length film ‘Drive’ (eventually rebuffed in favour of Cliff Martinez’ effort), finally sees its own release. ‘Themes for an Imaginary Film’ is around two hours of genuine cinematic depth, exploring the possibilities of European noir and brash American benevolence from Jewel and Chromatics’ Nat Walker. Although much of the material dates back to 2008, listening conjures up obvious links to the 2011 film. Yet narrative potential is ample - graphic imaginings flashing exuberantly across pulsating bass, textural ambience and rhythmic intent.
