Amman, Jordan’s Toumba makes his debut on the revered Hessle Audio label with a new EP entitled Petals. A triple threat producer/DJ/curator, Toumba utilises tools native to his homeland to build these sprawling, tricky slices of forward thinking bass music. The A side’s ‘Istibtan’ riffs on traditional Jordan nuptial music, translating the melody while adding deep bass knocks around the margins until it resembles something you might hear on a different kind of dancefloor. The closing ‘Identity Crisis’ pulls a similar trick by using the Maqam Rast (not far from the Major Scale in Western music) as a jumping off point to explore more modern notation in a wholly unique way.
