After building buzz for a couple of years now, Sudan Archives (Brittney Denise Parks) drops her debut LP Athena via Stones Throw. This is a record that simultaneously maintains the unique core of the Sudan Archives project while also broadening its horizons. Songs here are still helmed by Parks’ singular combination of violin, loops and effects, tools that give both stately and earthy qualities to her modern R ‘n’ B style. However, the choice to allow external producers into the fold - Wilma Archer, Paul White, Rodaidh McDonald and Washed Out - makes Athena the most dynamic Sudan Archives release to date.
