We can’t really believe it’s been five whole years since 2016’s Body Wash, but there’s a distinct evolution that’s been concealed beneath the surface of Mndsgn’s work. Judging by the luscious pop sensibilities woven throughout the tall, sun-kissed glass of pulp orange juice that is Rare Pleasure, it’s easy to forget that Ringgo Ancheta is one of the 21st century’s finest beatmakers and not a criminally underrated jazz singer, besotted by the potentialities of psychedelic pop. The likes of ‘Slowdance’ deal a blow not unlike the beautifully smooth suaveness of 1990s RnB, while ‘Medium Rare’ comes off as effortlessly cool as when Thundercat slows it way down.
