LA’s prolific beat maker label Leaving Records treat us with a vinyl version of the scraps and B-sides that preceded last year’s debut from Ringgo Ancheta aka Mndsgn (pronounced “mind design”). Another release that shows it’s proven fruitful for the Leaving Records / Stones Throw family to advocate the outtakes format. The sketchy character of this collage goes well with the experimental feel of Ancheta’s production approach. Rooted in soul jazz, his fragmented pieces layer dusty Fender Rhodes pianos, glistening wind chimes and potbellied synths, with its noise floor carrying its own illusion of a glimpse at long-forgotten history.
