Gigi Masin has been exploring uncharted sonic territories since the 80s, and his latest album may be his most emotional yet. Dedicated to Masin’s late wife, Vahiné is rich with ambient beauty and deep techno propulsions, a heartfelt combination of electronic worlds. The wistful yet euphoric ‘Marilene (Somewhere In Texas)’ is abundant in worldly instruments: oceanic kalimba plucks, the stillness of brass chords, and twirling piano notes. ‘Vahiné’ comes a long way from the album’s beginning, its electrified downtempo rhythms mimicking the movements of the Tahitian storytelling aparima dance, carrying an epic feeling of transformation.
