Lydia Tár is one of modern music’s greatest living composers and conductors, in Todd Field’s latest film that is. Starring Cate Blanchett, TÁR follows the composer as the facade on her stardom begins to crack, set to the tense and conceptual soundtrack of real world composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. The orchestral grandeur of symphonies from Mahler and Elgar is guided by Blanchett’s instructions, accompanied by an original score where the hand of the conductor is made audible in viciously straining strings as her baton slices through the air, ordering the slurring of notes into pits of unease and peaks of epic intrigue.
