British multi-instrumentalist and producer cktrl’s latest self-released EP yield seeks out a sonic field rooted in traditional music stylings, but seen through a modernist lens. Pulling in from modal jazz, baroque, and classical, the mostly instrumental yield is both thematically rich and a tremendous platform for cktrl’s expressive saxophone playing. Written after coming out of a dark, grief-stricken stretch, its title is about cktrl’s need to create no matter the circumstance. In fact he finds strength in facing that darkness head on, with songs like the Ophie-featured ‘love + war’ and the title track staking claim for the power in vulnerability.
