With his 2001 album for Hymen Records, Canadian techno producer Aaron Funk aka Venetian Snares hadn't really shown his darkest side up until then. Based on the theme of murdering children, the breakcore album samples different kinds of recordings – such as an information line referencing the case of a six year old girl that was killed in the USA in the 90s, but also sound excerpts from the video game EarthBound and minimalist composer Philip Glass. On ‘Dollmaker’, Funk uses Apocalyptica’s cello version of Metallica’s ‘Harvester Of Sorrows’ and mutilates it with a restless breakbeat composed of overdriven kick drums – after misleadingly introducing the song with mellow jazz percussion and piano, rendering the song a perfect example for his brutal, yet eclectic style.
