Body Riddle (Remastered)

Available on vinyl for the first time since its 2006 release, this remastered edition lets us explore even deeper into the seismic power of one of Clark’s most highly revered albums. After his first two albums for Warp, Clark dropped his first name, going exclusively by his surname for his musical activities. Such a seemingly small change in presentation acted like an artistic re-debut, as his 3rd album, Body Riddle, completely blew all expectations of his capabilities out of the water.

With an intense range of sound design that nods overtly to elements of krautrock, post rock, and musique concrète, Body Riddle is a record for extremophiles, jumping from the heaviest beats that will force the breath out of your lungs to the sweetest susurrations of melodies. ‘Herr Barr’ throws you in the deep end instantly, splitting the earth with its maelstrom of angular drums contrasting against fairy-like celesta twinkles. This organic element is owed to the live drums Clark plays across the album, breathing life into the dense vortex of electronica and ephemeral structures found throughout.

‘Frau Wav’ dives further into the whirlpool with swung rhythms and floods of grand strings swerving through white rapids of sound. Later, ‘Herzog’ is a supercell storm of spiralling arpeggios, shattering stained glass, and synths forking like lightning bolts. Like many other tracks here, they remind of awesome and violent forces of nature; guitar scrapes through the sky like a bolide, drums channel avalanches and volcanic eruptions. The closing ‘The Autumnal Crush’ is a series of explosions, with the album’s sole human voice initiating a cathartic outpouring of emotional energy before the song drifts into the aether.

Body Riddle is not only a testament to Clark’s playful musical explorations, but is an emotional highlight in his career.

05-10

With the remastered edition of Clark’s seminal 3rd album Body Riddle comes a compilation gathering rare and unreleased material from an incredibly fruitful period of his career. Featuring tracks from his 2006 EP Throttle Furniture, as well as several throttleclark.com releases and songs resurfaced from the archives, 05-10 adds another angle to the story of what is considered one of the highlights in Clark’s discography.

As much as 05-10 exists in companionship with Body Riddle, with its similarly unpredictable and unapologetically pounding drums, and lilting strings and melodies, it also stands on its own as a record of even more wide reaching explorations. From leftfield acid rhythms through frenetic drum and bass, to reflective ambient pieces painting internal landscapes, and a host of other genre-evading tracks, this compilation is a fascinating entry point into a 5 year period where Clark flexes his musical muscles and showcases his talents in pretty much any field, genre or tempo he touches.

Electrical signals trace hyper and ecstatic arcs in the opening ‘Frau Wav (Brief Fling)’, setting the scene for a number of dancefloor focussed tracks with incendiary energy. Harsh detuned rushes on ‘Re-Scar Kiln’ fold in on themselves, constantly recalibrating with complex rhythms latticed underneath. ‘Urgent Jell Hack’ comes with literal throttle as its bloated jet engine bass rages on to jagged, distorted beats. Calmness starts to trickle in further down the tracklist, with oneiric flushes of chords and ambience gliding throughout lurching drums on ‘Dusk Raid’, and the idyllic palettes of ‘Herr Barr (Improv)’, a live improvisation with Trish Keenan and James Cargill of Broadcast, giving a wondrous, otherworldly quality.

05-10 is a must-hear for any Clark fan who has been craving the experimental excitement of his Body Riddle era.
