His first solo album since 2019’s Simian Angel (with many collaborations in between), Oren Ambarchi takes his musical entourage up a spiral staircase of winding polyrhythmic guitar patterns. Rooted in the “rhythmic workouts” of previous albums like Quixotism and Hubris, Shebang embarks on an expansive, borderless dance through instrumental explorations. The album opens with an optimistic gait, its bright, twinkling plucks played with robotically precise timing. Swishing percussion and humming bass notes tiptoe into more frenetic improvisations as the whole Shebang erupts with waves of drums and synths crashing over cascading pianos, journeying like a ship over choppy waters.
