Meitei makes his debut on the KITCHEN LABEL for the conclusion of his “lost Japanese moods” trilogy with the sublime Kofū / 古風. While the prior Kwaidan and Komachi LPs were close studies of classic Japanese art and culture, Meitei intends this final piece to be a subtle subversion of those old practices. By pairing more traditional Japanese ambient leaning sounds with outside influences of hip-hop and noise genres, Meitei offers a broader invitation into the world of these sounds. While reflective on the surface level, Kofū / 古風 also offers some tough social commentary. Tracks like ‘Nyōbō’ (which is dedicated to working class women) that take aim at the patriarchal systems that have kept the ruling class in power.
