German label Karlrecords see fit to release a suite of compositions from pioneer of process music and minimalism Steve Reich. Containing some of his earliest works with phasing in the late 60s, these performances were originally recorded in 1997 and 98 by Ensemble Avantgarde. Timbral qualities change over time as organ notes drift in and out of unison, firstly in the monolithic, wondrous chords of ‘Four Organs’, and later in the more frenzied falling stalactites of ‘Phase Patterns’. ‘Pendulum Music’, meanwhile, is space made audible, with microphones swinging over speakers as though instruments played by gravity.
