Avant-jazz greats Fire! are back with a new collaboration featuring Stephen O’Malley of doom metal visionaries Sunn O))) and David Sandström from Swedish punk group Refused. This new EP Requiēs follows in similar fashion to prior collabs with Jim O’Rourke and Oren Ambarchi, with the trio smashing their usual free jazz aesthetic into the styles of their guests. Most of Requiēs plays closer to Sunn O))’s playbook, with dense noise and squawking horns building into a steady churn. That is, until the record’s final quarter releases into the sort of post-punk fury that wouldn’t seem out of place on Refused’s classic LP The Shape of Punk To Come.
