UK-based brothers Ed and Tom Russell have been perfecting their idiosyncratic club sound together as Overmono since 2016. Though their formula is tried and true, captivating audiences across countless gigs over the years with their low frequency focussed woozy rhythms, these artists still have an insatiable desire for learning new tricks.

On Cash Romantic, Overmono return to their roots to break the formula and expand their horizons. The EP was inspired by the brothers’ discovery of mixtapes they had made as children; perhaps why many tracks are glossed in the nostalgic sheen of film grain and disposable camera aesthetics. While the legacy of 2-step garage remains ensconced in their sound palette, this EP sees the two reach new heights in their production game. Introspective and (partly) drumless meditations march with the same invigorating propulsion as the heaviest and hardest ravers in their repertoire, still present, but with extra bite.

The title track tears right through the skin of urgent and rippling drums, snarling synth splatters escaping from within. ‘Gunk’ is an instant hit, jumping to and fro with spectrally revolving rhythms, and a vocal earworm thanks to a flickering sample of Kindora’s ‘3 x 3’. Canines whine and sink fangs into the thick wobble of ‘Bone Mics’, whose percussion sounds like snooker balls clacking front and centre in your mind.

Overmono add another batch of expertly executed productions to their discography, updating their already robust output with a newly open world vision.
