Originally released on ~scape in 2003, 1+3+1 is a collaboration between jazz trio Triosk and Jan Jelinek at the peak of his click ‘n’ pop powers. Highly sought after, like pretty much all of Jelinek’s work from that period, it’s been issued on vinyl for the first time by Jelinek’s own Faitiche imprint. Fans of early Four Tet and Telefon Tel Aviv will find a lot of joy in its mangled organic conjurings, as the intermingled sonics of instruments both acoustic and electronic cast the organic/artificial debate out of the nearest window. The post-bop propulsion and modal jazz meanders of Charlie Parker and early Miles Davis find their modern equivalents in the likes of ‘Track 2’ and the amalgamated kind-of title track ‘Theme From Trioskinek’, as interminable, ride-heavy percussion and strutting double bass duke it out against Jelinek’s beautifully out-of-step programming.
