A certifiable supergroup comes together to pay tribute to an artist whose legacy has cruelly remained a footnote, until now. Bob Kaufman was one of the few Black Beat poets, and his story is one of artistic triumph and harsh psychic trauma. Frequently jailed and horrifyingly subjected to electric shock therapy, Kaufman’s life ended prematurely due in large part to mental health issues as a result. The Plastik Beatnics project is an attempt to correct that tragedy via an avant-garde blend of psychedelic jazz, hip-hop, and spoken word. Including contributions from Patti Smith, Moor Mother, Angel Bat Dawid, among others, these twelve songs incorporate poems from Kaufman, Allen Ginsberg, and as well as interviews and other ephemera from the era. A vital work in restoring Kaufman's gifts to the world.
