It's hard to deny Joy Orbison’s influence in recent years. His early singles signified a sea change in underground tastes and came to define what many would call a key moment in UK music. Joy O has had great timing since: always dropping in with another huge release or two just when things seemed to get too quiet, but still maintaining a level of distance and mystique. However, last year’s familial still slipping vol. 1 mixtape suggested a change. The revealing nature (informed no doubt by the voicemails and other ephemera from friends and relatives) of still slipping padded out a bit more of the Joy Orbison story, while also showing off his prodigious skills on tracks that had had very little to do with the club. Now the Londoner is back quite soon by his standards with a tight new limited edition 10” of dance floor heaters entitled pink ring / red velve7.

Things kick off on the A side with ‘pinky ring’, a track that serious punters may already recognise from recent Joy O and Overmono sets. A slinky bit of UKG, the hovering sub-bass on ‘pinky ring’ nods to his “post-dubstep” past while also keeping an eye on what’s new and exciting. The track’s buzzing energy was reportedly by the feeling he’s gotten lately from his return to the decks. We’ve heard the B side ‘red velve7’ already as a standalone digital single last year, but this half time drum and bass banger still hits just right.
