The ninth LP from Guillermo Scott Herren’s Prefuse 73 project is a great example of the possibilities of sample music. Clearly built from little more than a couple of samplers, Sacrifices is still a richly detailed album. Though to the untrained ear the beatwork has that sloppy, off-kilter feel of Madlib and early Flying Lotus, it’s clear that these tracks have been crafted with real care and precision. At heart it is still a beat-tape, but a very ambitious one. Cuts like ‘The World Is Bigger’ and the James Tillman-featuring ‘Silver & Gold’ spill over from hip-hop sampledelia into a world of MPC soul-jazz.
