The South London collagist Klein is a master of dynamics. Infamously claiming inspiration from both Beyoncé and Pavarotti, she has an innate ability to find the abstraction in populist sounds and vice versa, often as a means of processing hurt. While her prior records made nods to pop and dance music, her sparse 2020’s self-release Frozen is more elemental. Recorded largely in her bedroom from single takes, meditations on the passing of friends (‘another dust’) and influential characters (‘mark’ a tribute to Mark Duggan who’s 2011 death at the hands of Met police inspired riots in the UK) are rendered with little more than quietly picked guitars or total silence. In between those are the sounds of traffic and the mundanity of city life, field recordings that house the harsh realities of the world.
