Released in 1986 the Free Yourself EP from Marshall Jefferson’s Virgo project has become a sought after classic as well as a cornerstone of trademark Chicago house. The 2014 remastered edition reminds us of its reverence, starting off with the deep title piece ‘Free Yourself’ with its phasered hi-hats and congo-led groove followed by the dramatic chords on ‘Under You’. The other side features ‘My Space’ from Adonis, noted for its nasty, jacking funk whereas the final cut ‘R U Hot Enough’ is a perfect example of early piano house with a bubbling acid bass line adding that extra twist.
