Move D & Benjamin Brunn’s Songs From The Beehive turns ten this year, so what better time for Smallville Records to repress the album to wax. One of the first records to drop on the Hamburg imprint, Songs From The Beehive was a line in the sand. It went a long way to establishing the label’s sound, one that has since been popularised by the likes of Moomin and Christopher Rau. Still, for all their subsequent success, Songs From The Beehive is still held in high regard by both Smallville staff and fans alike. The veteran DJ pair find a beautiful new niche for deep house on this record, one which incorporates elements of acid house and the jazz/electronic fusion stuff that Four Tet was doing at the same time. This record needs two LPs to accommodate the lengthy runtimes, but it never feels over-long or indulgent.
