Beloved Norwegian musician and novelist Jenny Hval returns with one of her most challenging propositions yet: a pop album. Defining pop as a tighter adherence to verse and chorus structures, Classic Objects thankfully gives Hval plenty of room to develop the kind of idiosyncratic songs that have defined her career. Album opener ‘Year Of Love’ conjures a bygone era of 'sophisti-pop' with palm-muted guitars and light dub influences, while the eight-minute single ‘Jupiter’ is punctuated by a distorted clatter of drums. Even in the act of moving towards accessibility, the rigid shapes of pop feels thrillingly malleable in Hval’s grasp.
